c2countit allows you to have a FREE graphical counter on any and all pages that you want. Most counters have to use SSI (Server Side Includes), which really slows down the speed of your pages, but c2countit uses a small C program called fly, which is very fast and very easy to install! c2countit doesn keep any stats but it is the simpliest easiest counter on the web!

- CGI 101: counter.pl
This is a simple sort of "hidden" counter. It is designed to be used in lieu of an image tag, so instead of doing img src="whatever.gif", you might use img src="counter.cgi". The script increments a counter in a file, then returns the gif image. The person visiting your page need never know you have an embedded counter going.
